The Imperial Hotel, Torquay and mystery envelopes

On 20th February 2008 Helen Evans, Workhigher Project Officer, was invited to make a presentation at Exeter College’s residential training break for the work-based learning staff of the college at the Imperial Hotel, Torquay. Helen explained Aimhigher and the Advance Project that Strand 7 Workhigher is currently undertaking with the LSC. Information about Strand 7, Workhigher’s, aims and role were given as handouts together with copies of the excellent Apprentice Toolkit and Vocational Pathways booklet.

Further information was given to the audience regarding the Advance Project and its objectives, the exit interview forms which these staff will use with their completing advanced apprentices were shown and described, directing them to the “toolkit” which has been created for this purpose.

The presentation ended with the four nominated people coming up for their mystery envelope, who all stood facing the audience looking a little perplexed. Helen explained that this was a light hearted way of showing how anxious, worried, curious or excited a learner may feel when applying for higher education, it might change their lives totally, may cost them something or they could be completely mystified by it all. Inside was a small bar of chocolate and a lucky dip lottery ticket for that night’s draw, however, Helen had signed it on the reverse so if there was a winner she would get a share – after all higher education does now come at some cost!
