Healthcare Taster Day

On a sunny day in May Aimhigher’s healthcare strand in partnership with the Peninsula Programme’s Workhigher Strand held an event at the University of Plymouth to promote higher level learning for a range of health care professions.  Apprentices currently on programmes with private training provides together with vocational learners from local high schools were invited to the half day event which attracted around 24 visitors plus staff, friends and parents.  There was a good mix of attendees including some already working the care sector and wishing to progress from Level 2 and 3 qualifications as well as sixth form students considering their next steps.

Those attending had the opportunity to meet with student ambassadors on health care programmes, have a tour of the University of Plymouth campus together with a series of short talks from a number of health care lecturers including nursing and occupational therapy as well as being given information on Foundation Degrees.  There were also opportunities for visitors to gather general information and ask questions about costs, which courses were available across the region.  All attendees were given a “goody bag” containing a range of information about higher level studies and relevant websites and telephone contacts for further help should they require it.

Feedback from delegates was good with all finding the event “useful” or “very useful”.  Responses at the end of the session also suggested that a number of those unsure about higher level studies were now ready to look more closely at the possibility of progression.

Aimhigher would like to thank all those lecturers who gave their time to present sessions at the event.  Hopefully this will be the first of a number of taster events.  If any training provider would like an event organised for a specific group of learners or would like someone to come and talk to learners during their Advanced Apprenticeship please contact Aimhigher Project Officer Liz Kingdom 01392 851242 or liz.kingdom@talk21.com.
