Friday was pie day!
On Friday 15th June at North Devon College over 100 employers and 150 students visited the Construction Industry Open Day. This was the second Construction event supported by Aimhigher this year, the first being at Somerset College in February.
15 speakers informed attendees of a variety of subjects throughout the day - ranging from North Devon District Council, Barnstaple Western Bypass, Women into Construction, HE Revenue and Customs and Train to Gain to trade speakers from companies such as Velux, Dewalt, Continental Energy Systems and SCL Water.
There were competitions to enter as well as a Construction Skills Certification Scheme Health and Safety Quizdom, to test employers on their Health & Safety knowledge. Also a Regional BPEC Skillbuild Competition took place during the day where attendees could watch the plumbing students crafting lead boxes.
Free bacon rolls and Cornish pasties with plenty of hot drinks were available to warm people up on this dreary but very successful day. The general consensus of opinion was that it was an extremely worthwhile event, not only promoting awareness of the Construction Industry as a whole but bringing together a wide range of talent and services available to those working in this sector.
There are plans to repeat the day next year making it bigger still.
