Qualifications

There are a whole range of vocational qualifications available some of which have been around for a number of years e.g. BTEC, NVQ’s and Apprenticeships.  Others such as Foundation Degrees may be less familiar.

Foundation Degrees have been introduced in the past two or three years and have been developed with employers so that they meet the specific needs of business.  Much of the time on a Foundation Degree is spent in the workplace undertaking projects and developing skills which employers have identified as being vital for business success e.g. team working, communication, planning ahead and meeting deadlines.

Foundation Degrees can be studied full-time for two years or can be taken part-time combining study and working.  Normally it would take around three years to complete on a part-time basis.

Vocational qualifications are available at all levels and may include the following:

Foundation
(Level 1)

Intermediate (Level 2)

Advanced Level
(Level 3)

Professional Level
(Level 4-6)

*There is a phased withdrawal of GNVQs which should be complete by 2007.  These subjects will then be covered by Vocational GCSEs.
